In many swamps, marshes, and other wetlands around the world, people have witnessed an unusual phenomenon known as the will-o’-the-wisp. It has the appearance of small balls of light that flicker and move around in the air. The will-o’-the-wisp is seen only at night. In folk literature, there are many supernatural stories associated with the will-o’-the-wisp; scientists have three different theories of natural causes of the phenomenon.

One explanation holds that the lights are small balls of burning swamp gas. As organic material buried in the swamps decays, it often releases flammable gases like methane and hydrogen phosphide. When these gases rise to the surface and escape, they mix with air and spontaneously ignite, creating small burning lights. These burning lights may be what people see when they spot the will-o’-the-wisp.

Another explanation claims that the will-o’-the-wisp is an electric spark from crystalline minerals like quartz. When some crystalline minerals are put under pressure, they produce an electric charge known as piezoelectricity. Over time, pressure caused by geologic activity may create large amounts of piezoelectricity in deposits of crystalline quartz and other similar minerals. If this electricity is discharged as sparks into the atmosphere, it may look like glowing lights.

Yet another explanation is that the lights are actually birds that are covered with a bioluminescent fungus (bioluminescent fungi spontaneously emit light and therefore glow in the dark). Some birds often roost inside tree trunk hollows, where the bioluminescent fungus grows. If the fungus rubbed off onto a bird, the bird would then glow. Seen from a distance, a glowing, slowly moving bird would appear to be simply a floating light, prompting people to believe that they have seen the will – o’-the – wisp.

Long school breaks offer students a valuable opportunity to rest and recharge. However, some educators believe that schools should assign work during these breaks to help students stay engaged with their studies and retain knowledge. What do you think? Should schools assign homework during long school breaks?

Andrew

I think schools should assign some homework during long breaks, but it should be work that interests students and isn’t boring. This way, students can stay engaged and reinforce what they’ve learned without feeling overwhelmed. This keeps learning fun while still helping them retain important knowledge during the break.

Claire

I don’t think schools should assign homework during long breaks because if students run into problems, they won’t have access to teachers for help. If a student is struggling with a math problem and has no one to explain it, they might waste a lot of time without learning anything.
