Many cities in the United States and other countries have begun to use automatic cameras to enforce traffic laws. These cameras photograph a vehicle and its license plate when sensors determine that the driver has gone through a red light or is going too fast. The driver is then sent a traffic ticket through the mail and has to pay a fine. However, there are critics who point out that the use of traffic cameras has several disadvantages and limitations.
First, the strategy of replacing real traffic officers with traffic cameras has a serious disadvantage. When human officers detect instances of dangerous driving, they can immediately intervene by stopping the driver and issuing a fine. When the traffic camera system is used, however, it might be several days, or even weeks, before the driver is notified of the violation. In other words, unlike the officers, the cameras cannot stop dangerous driving behavior when it occurs.
Second, cameras do not really help solve an important problem: drivers often do not follow traffic rules if they know they are not being monitored. When a road is monitored by traffic officers, drivers obey rules only on those stretches of the road where the officers are present. Similarly, with traffic cameras, drivers obey rules only in areas where cameras have been installed. In other words, traffic cameras do not motivate drivers to obey traffic rules any more consistently than officers do.
Third, the use of traffic cameras at intersections has actually caused traffic accidents. When going through an intersection, some drivers unnecessarily slow down or stop abruptly when they see a traffic camera. This can result in their being hit by cars driving behind them. In fact, accidents in which one driver hits the back of another’s car have increased 15 percent at intersections equipped with traffic cameras.

Next week we’ll be talking about factors that contribute to human happiness. Surveys reveal that career satisfaction and the quality of personal relationships, such as with family and friends, are frequently identified as two important factors for happiness. Which of these two factors – career or relationships – do you think most people would say has the greater impact on their overall happiness?
Claire
I would say career satisfaction impacts overall happiness more. Having a fulfilling job gives you a sense of purpose and achievement that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. It’s a core part of your identity and self – worth. Relationships are vital too, but work dominates so much of our waking lives that its role in our well – being can’t be overstated.
Paul
Relationships are more impactful for happiness than career. We’re social beings, so having strong bonds with family and friends fulfills a core need. Quality time with loved ones boosts positive emotions and provides a support system during tough times. That’s why relationships trump career when it comes to overall well – being.
