Writing | Question 1 of 2

The pallid sturgeon—a fish native to rivers in the United States—is now in danger of extinction. Conservationists attribute the pallid sturgeon’s decline to a small dam along the Yellowstone River built to use irrigation to redirect water to local farms. The dam blocks pallid sturgeon as they try to swim hundreds of miles up the river to reproduce. Conservationists currently help pallid sturgeon reproduce in captivity, but they are investigating ways to help pallid sturgeon swim up the river to reproduce naturally without human assistance.

Engineers have suggested replacing the small dam with a new larger dam and a side channel—a canal dug out along the side of the dam—that would allow pallid sturgeon to swim around it. Side channels built in other locations have successfully helped other species of fish bypass dams. Engineers believe that a similar strategy would also be effective for pallid sturgeon, allowing them to swim around the new large dam and up the river to their native breeding waters.

Another solution is replacing the small dam with a group of gates across the river to control the flow of water. When the gates are up in a vertical position, they block the flow of the river and redirect the water to irrigate local farms. Conversely, when the gates are lowered to a flat, horizontal position, the water flows over the gates, allowing pallid sturgeon to easily swim up the river to their natural breeding habitat.

A third proposal is to replace the dam with a system of pumps along the river. Conservationists suggest that the pumps could redirect water to farmers just as effectively as the small dam currently does. This solution would remove the barrier that prevents pallid sturgeon from swimming freely up the river to reproduce naturally, while at the same time meeting the needs of the farmers.

With so many opportunities to connect nowadays, some people believe that no matter which country we come from, we have more similarities than we have differences. However, others have observed that differences between themselves and people from other countries are growing. In your view, are differences between people from different countries increasing, or are they diminishing? Why?

Andrew

I think the differences among us are decreasing as our exposure to products from other countries grows. We can enjoy food from any country. We can watch movies made in faraway places. We can go to a store and buy authentic goods from around the world. These things become part of our normal life and make our differences seem smaller.

Kelly

I understand what Andrew is saying, but for some people, being exposed to differences makes them retreat into their own corner even more. Look at social media. We are exposed to many different people and ideas, but a lot of people talk to only those they agree with and ignore the rest. This only makes the differences between people increase.
