The guillemot is a seabird that lays its eggs on bare rock surfaces by the sea, without nests. The guillemot’s eggs have attracted the special attention of researchers because of their unusual appearance, texture, and shape. But researchers have not been able to agree on a scientific explanation for these unusual features.

Pattern

First of all, guillemot eggs come in many different colors, and each egg has a unique pattern of dark spots or speckles. Most birds produce eggs with a consistent appearance, so researchers have a hard time explaining why guillemot eggs are all so different. The unusual variety of colors and markings on guillemot eggs makes them interesting to look at, since each guillemot egg looks different from any other guillemot egg. But there seems to be no practical purpose for this unusual variation.

Surface

Second, the surfaces of guillemot eggs are oddly rough or bumpy in comparison with those of other birds’ eggs. Researchers thought that this roughness might help guillemots keep the eggs balanced on top of their feet, which is how they usually hold the eggs. However. experiments and observations have not confirmed this hypothesis. The rough surface of guillemot eggs remains unexplained.

Shape

Third, guillemot eggs are longer and more pointed than the eggs of almost any other bird species. For a long time, scientists believed that this shape prevented guillemot eggs from rolling all the way off the uneven rock surfaces and breaking on other rocks far below. However, it turns out that it is quite common for guillemot eggs to roll off rocks; the special shape does not seem to prevent this problem.

Dr. Achebe:

This week, we will be discussing space exploration. Some people think that it is a waste of money for governments to fund space exploration. Others disagree with this view, arguing that space exploration is a valuable and necessary investment for our future. They think that it is worthy for governments to fund space exploration. I want to know what you think about this topic. Do you think that governments should fund space exploration? Why or why not?

Kelly:

I don’t think that governments should fund space exploration because it will be too costly to build spaceships and develop related technologies. Though space exploration tech costs billions, it doesn’t offer direct benefits to most people, which makes its funding a controversial issue.

Andrew:

Personally, I do think that all the costs will be worth it. The potential scientific discoveries and technological advancements could have far – reaching impacts that justify the initial investment. Imagine the new inventions that might come from this exploration. Such technology could greatly improve our everyday lives.
